Hurricane Bill packed a wallup from afar as the category 2 storm churned its way along the eastern seaboard; and while the sun shined over most of southern New England, the whirling dervish, though hundreds of miles out to sea, stung the shoreline of Misqaumicut with waves up to 25 feet! But a funny thing happened only 24 hours later, the late Charlie himself must have been smiling on the scenic shoreline expanse as the wild sea calmed. After all, nothing could stop his many running comrades of all ages from honoring his memory for the 16th time!
Jeff Walker of the Westerly Track & Athletic Club took the early lead in this unique 3 mile beach jaunt, but was unable to hold off a hard charging Dan Springer. The former Westerly High School and Boston College standout runner assumed the lead with just over a mile to go and stretched his advantage to nearly a minute and a half crossing the line in 19 minutes and 1 second. Walker was second in 20:26 followed by Mark Burbelo of Westerly in 20:34.
The womens’ race featured some great young running talent as 14 year old Brandi LeClair of Fitch HS (Groton, CT) went out strong with the men finishing 4th overall in a solid 20:57! 13 yr. old Jackie Burr and 12 yr. old Maddy McLaughlin both of Westerly17th and 18th respectively! Fractions separated the 2 young running stars as both were timed in 22:44!
The 22nd running of this annual beach race honors the memory of Charlie Stavros, a top flight road racer and member of the Westerly Track & Athletic Club for many years who tragically passed away during a road race in Westerly in 1993. It was formerly known as the “Low Tide Beach Race”.
